WORD AHEAD:
EDITOR’S NOTE

Seeing Northern Nigeria differently.

Welcome to the inaugural edition of UNVEILED.

Northern Nigeria is often defined by its problems — insecurity, poverty, underdevelopment and crisis. These realities matter, and we will not ignore them. But they are not the whole story.

Beyond the headlines is a region of extraordinary people, diverse cultures, remarkable landscapes, ambitious businesses, creative talent and enormous potential. UNVEILED exists to tell that fuller story.

We will celebrate achievement, explore our culture and heritage, discover places and businesses, and meet the people shaping the North’s future. At the same time, we will examine the challenges holding our communities back and highlight practical ideas, initiatives and people working towards solutions.

Our approach is constructive but honest. We believe optimism should not mean looking away from difficult realities, just as acknowledging those realities should not mean surrendering to them.

We will look beyond the familiar centres of the region and seek stories from communities and voices that rarely receive sustained attention.

Our ambition is simple: to help people see Northern Nigeria differently; not only for what it has been, or what it is today, but for what it can become.

This is our invitation to look beyond the headlines. Welcome to UNVEILED.

NORTHERN NIGERIA: BEYOND THE HEADLINES

By David A. Atta · 7 min read

For much of the Nigerian public, Northern Nigeria has become shorthand for a collection of familiar problems: insecurity, poverty, out-of-school children, political instability and economic deprivation.

“They have destroyed lives, displaced communities, weakened institutions and deprived millions of people of opportunities they deserve.”
